Where: Anderson (Pizza King)

When:
November 17, 2007

Who: Man uknown

What:
Anderson police are searching for the man who used a gun to rob a west-side restaurant Friday night. It was the area’s fifth robbery in a week, but police have not said if the crimes are the act of a single suspect. The lone gunman entered the Pizza King at 2424 Nichol Ave. 30 minutes before midnight, surprising a female employee who was washing dishes. He pointed a gun at her and demanded that she open the cash register, police said. The employee was taken off guard, and when she did not immediately comply to the robber’s demands, he grabbed the woman, placed her in a headlock and drug her to the counter, police said. A male employee in another part of the restaurant heard the confrontation and entered the area by the front counter. The suspect then fired a single shot that nearly hit the male employee, police said. The male employee told police he felt the percussion of the gun blast and fell to the floor. The suspect then ordered him to open the cash register. After grabbing the money, the suspect forced the two employees to turn over their own money at gunpoint before leaving the restaurant and fleeing northbound, police said.
Why: To steal the money out of the cash register. The suspect was described as a black man, standing between 5-feet-11 and 6-feet and weighting 170 pounds. He was wearing a light-gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a white bandana. The description is similar to one given for a suspect in four earlier robberies.

STATE

Where:
INDIANAPOLIS

When:
November 16, 2007

Who: Mitch Danials

What:
The state expects to have $56 million available to help needy residents with their heating bills this winter and utility companies could provide an additional $2 million in relief, Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday. “We’ve taken all the steps we can again this year to be ready to help Hoosiers,” Daniels said. Daniels started a heating assistance program in 2005 called Help Thy Neighbor, a $7 million effort funded by grants, private donations and contributions from utility companies. This year, Daniels said three companies — Vectren, Citizens Gas and the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. — will launch a similar effort using their own money to provide about $2 million in aid.
Why: Because gas/heating prices are going to be higher than ever this year there will be many that will have trouble with paying there heat bill so this is to help those people keep there heat on.

U.S. NEWS

Where: UPPER MARLBORO, Maryland

When: November 17, 2007

Who: Frustrated parents

What: A crowd of frustrated parents gathered on a chilly Saturday morning outside Prince George's County Circuit Court to comply with an order from the school system to have their children vaccinated -- or else. Prince George's County State's Attorney Glenn Ivey, whose office began the effort, was at the courthouse to answer questions. Judge C. Philip Nichols, who signed the letters threatening parents with jail or fines, said he felt the tactic worked. "We got a thousand kids back in school just by sending one letter," he said. Nichols ordered parents to come to court Saturday to either immunize the children on the spot, or to provide proof that they already had their shots, according to The Associated Press. Families who failed to comply could face 10 to 30 days in jail.

Why: Because many people think that the vaccines can hurt the children so many children have not taken the vaccine but because of this they are ordered to take the shots since the benefits of vaccinations against childhood diseases outweigh the risks.

World

Where: PHNOM PENH, Cambodia

When: November 11, 2007

Who:
Khieu Samphan

What:
Khieu Samphan, the former Khmer Rouge head of state, was arrested Monday by a U.N.-backed genocide tribunal after being taken from a hospital where he was being treated following a stroke, officials said. Police escorted Khieu Samphan from a Phnom Penh hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday. They held his arms for support and led him to a police car, which sped away in a convoy of a half dozen police vehicles. "Khieu Samphan, the former head of state of Democratic Kampuchea was arrested," said tribunal spokesman Reach Sambath, referring to the official name of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime. Khieu Samphan's arrest by a U.N.-backed genocide tribunal has been widely expected. The tribunal already has arrested four of his colleagues to face trial for atrocities during the regime's 1975-79 rule that led to the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people.

Who: People with Adenoviruses

What: A mutated version of a common cold virus has caused 10 deaths in the last 18 months, U.S. health officials said Thursday. Adenoviruses usually cause respiratory infections that aren't considered lethal. But a new variant has caused at least 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas, according to a report issued Thursday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC officials don't consider the mutation to be a cause for alarm for most people, and they're not recommending any new precautions for the general public.

TECH

Where: BENTONVILLE, Arkansas

When: November 15, 2007

Who: Wal Mart

What:
Wal-Mart presented little new information in its first major report on efforts to become greener, but it was enough to encourage some environmental groups to say that the world's largest retailer is trying. The report released Thursday details dozens of sustainability programs ranging from environmental to economic development, employee health care and ethics in overseas factories where it buys goods. Most have been disclosed previously, but the 64-page report is the first comprehensive catalog of dozens of programs -- from organic cotton clothes to low-energy freezer cases -- adopted since Chief Executive Lee Scott set three green goals in October 2005. Those goals are to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste and to sell products that help sustain resources and the environment. Scott did not set any timelines, although there are deadlines for some of the steps along the way.

SPORTS

Where: Indianapolis

When: November 18, 2007

Who: Colts

What: After losing two straight games to the Patriots and the Chargers, the Colts finally get a win at home against the Chiefs. Throughout the game both teams struggled offensively by missing 3 field goals between both teams. In the second half there wasnt much offense either. Addai scored a 3 yard run to give the colts a 10-3 lead but moments later the chiefs answered right back with a long pass to Bow it tie the game. The Colts would finish the game with a game winning field goal with 4 seconds on the clock to take the 13-10 win.

Why: Because both teams had an off day offensively especially the colts but a win is a win.

Business
Where: New York

When: November 18, 2007

Who: gas prices

What:
The price of gasoline has jumped another 13 cents in the last two weeks, close to the all-time high set earlier this year, according to a survey published Sunday. The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular is $3.09, the Lundberg Survey found. That's just 9 cents below the record set in May. The latest price is also 9 cents below the inflation-adjusted all-time high, said survey publisher Trilby Lundberg. In 1981, the price peaked at $1.35 -- which, in today's dollars, comes out to $3.10 using the latest Consumer Price Index data, she said. Don't be surprised if the records are shattered in the coming weeks, Lundberg said. Even if crude oil doesn't climb further, "we can easily see another dime at the pump," she said, "because refiners are severely squeezed between their oil buying price and their gasoline selling price."

Why: Because gas prices are high already plus its close to thanksgiving so prices were going to go up no matter what.

Election

Where: MARION, Iowa

When:
Nov 18

Who:
Barack Obama

What:
Democrat Barack Obama sharply criticized Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday for her past support of NAFTA, saying the former first lady had changed her mind about the trade agreement only since becoming a presidential candidate. I think it's important to note that Senator Clinton was a cheerleader for NAFTA for more than a decade," Obama said at a news conference with representatives of a regional United Auto Workers chapter, whose members voted last week to recommend an endorsement of the Illinois senator. "I realize that changing your position to suit the politics of the moment might be smart campaign tactics but isn't the kind of strong, principled leadership America needs right now," Obama said.

Why: Because Obama says that for the NAFTA but after becoming a presidential candidate she seems to change her position to suit the politics of the moment.
